SCORE: Red Sox 4, Rays 2.

RECORD: 9-15-2.

BREAKDOWN: Will Middlebrooks homered to left field in the third inning against Tampa Bay No. 5 starter Jake Odorizzi and Grady Sizemore had a two-run shot in the sixth when facing Cesar Ramos. Xander Bogaerts (2 for 4) added an RBI single.

THUMBS UP: After Clay Buchholz allowed two runs over six innings, relievers Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa and Edward Mujica retired nine of the 10 batters they faced.

THUMBS DOWN: Corey Brown pulled up chasing a ball off the bat of Ben Zobrist in the ninth inning and it fell in for a double. There was some miscommunication with Sizemore.

MEDICAL REPORT: Right fielder Shane Victorino (sore left side) missed the game and went through a workout at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers instead.

AROUND THE BASES: Manager John Farrell said final roster decisions would come on Friday with some cuts coming before that. … The start of the game was delayed 18 minutes because of a rainstorm. … Middlebrooks (2 for 3, hitting .317) has only three strikeouts in 41 at-bats. … Uehara has appeared in five spring training games and retired 15 of the 16 batters he has faced. … Veteran Jonny Gomes took the 45-minute bus ride just to get one at-bat as a pinch hitter and struck out in the eighth inning. … He didn’t get in the game but minor league infielder Matt Gedman was on the roster. He is the son of former Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman and played last season for Single A Salem.

NEXT GAME: The Red Sox host a split-squad Orioles team at JetBlue Park at 1:05 p.m. There is no television or radio coverage.
