As the manager of the reigning American League champions, John Farrell has the privilege of managing the 2014 AL All-Star team, and on Tuesday named the managers that would join him on staff.

Farrell announced that Cleveland Indians skipper Terry Francona and Minnesota Twins manager Rod Gardenhire will help coach the American Leaguers in 2014 Midsummer Classic taking place July 15 at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Francona, who managed the AL All-Star team twice after leading the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007, brought the Indians back to respectability in 2013, was named AL Manager of the Year after leading the Indians back to the postseason for the first time since 2007.

He and Farrell have known each other since they played together on the Indians in 1988. Farrell served as Francona’s pitching coach in Boston from 2007-10.

Gardenhire has been the manager of the Twins since 2002, and it made sense for Farrell to add him to the staff, seeing as the game would be held in the Twin Cities.

The Red Sox began a three-game set with the Twins on Tuesday, their only series in Minnesota during the 2014 regular season.
