Jonny Gomes is not worried about a reenactment of last weekendís bench-clearing brawl in Tampa Bay when the Rays return to Fenway Park on Friday for the start of a three-game series.
The incident erupted in the bottom of the seventh inning after Yunel Escobar stole third base and exchanged words with the Red Sox dugout. Gomes ran in from left field and shoved Escobar. Gomes, Escobar and the Raysí Sean Rodriguez were ejected.
The Sox lost the game extending their losing streak to 10 games, the teamís longest since an 11-game streak in 1994.
ďTo me itís over,Ē Gomes said. ďTotal non-issue now. Given the state of our team we have to worry about winning games... I think Escobar went out of his way to start something but thatís over with now. Granted, we werenít feeling exactly up to par but it wasnĎt like we started it.Ē
Gomes said he is not worried about getting hit by a pitch or getting any other message from the Rays.
ďNo. If they hit me Iím not going to charge,Ē he said. ďIíll be fine. Iím happy getting to first base. If they want to send a message, please let it be me. I want to go to first base.Ē
The issue is over for him.
ďIíd send up a little flare or say something in the media if I thought it was an issue,Ē he said. ďBut I truly donít think it is, speaking only for our team.Ē
The Sox have a three-game winning streak since that game.
