Being introduced on Wednesday from the door of the Green Monster that he once was caught coming out of during a game, Manny Ramirez showed that he was still “Being Manny,” and one of his former teammates decided to have some fun with the outfielder before his ceremonial first pitch.
Johnny Damon, who played with Ramirez in the Red Sox outfield from 2002-05, snuck away from the group behind Manny and went to the side waiting for the pitch. As Manny threw it towards Jason Varitek, Damon ran in and made a diving grab on the ball, finishing with a roll to the delight of the players and the crowd.
Damon’s parody brought back memories of July 21, 2004, when Damon picked up a deep hit by Baltimore’s David Newhan, attempted to fire it in to Mark Bellhorn, but was inexplicably cut off by Manny on an unnecessary dive, allowing Newhan to score easily on an inside-the-park home run, seen here in this YouTube video uploaded by user Mike Burgermeister.
After Damon’s dive Wednesday at Fenway, everyone in the park had a laugh, enjoying that Damon was finally able to get Manny back for the play almost a decade later.
