For the eighth time in a row, the Red Sox pitching staff allowed three earned runs or less on Friday, but the lack of offense that has plagued the Sox all year reared its ugly head in their frustrating 4-2 loss to the A’s.

Freshly activated from the 15-day DL due to a left shoulder strain, Felix Doubront gets the ball for the Red Sox in his first start in exactly one month.

Prior to his month-long DL stint, Doubront was 2-4 with a 5.12 ERA in nine starts this season. He lasted four innings in his last outing on May 20, allowing five runs on five hits, including two homers, with three walks and two strikeouts in a 7-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Doubront has made three career starts against the A’s, going 1-2 with an 8.56 ERA. In his last start against Oakland, he allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts.

Of A’s hitters in Friday’s lineup, Alberto Callaspo has faced Doubront the most, going 2-for-7 with two doubles. Yoenis Cespedes and Craig Gentry each have gone 2-for-4 off of him, while Josh Donaldson is the only other with a career hit, a double in three career at bats.

Brad Mills, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers for $1 on Tuesday, will make his A’s debut on Friday after scheduled starter Drew Pomeranz broke his right hand punching a chair on Monday. The 29-year-old lefthander hasn’t pitched since 2012, when he made one start for the Los Angeles Angels. He has pitched in 15 games in his four-year MLB career, starting 10 of them, and holds a 7.76 ERA in 53 1/3 total innings.

Only three hitters in the Sox lineup have ever faced Mills: David Ortiz, who is 2-for-4 with a home run; Mike Napoli, who is 1-for-3; and Dustin Pedroia, who doubled in his only at bat.
