Clay Buchholz looks like he's getting back to form, while Shane Victorino suffered a setback in rehabbing Red Sox news today.
Buchholz hurled six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts for the PawSox in Rochester this afternoon while Victorino had to sit the game out with stiffness.
Buchholz pitched six innings for Pawtucket, giving up just two hits, two walks, five strikeouts, and no runs. He threw 87 pitches, 51 for strikes, close to the 90-95 pitches Red Sox manager John Farrell was hoping to get out of the righthander.
Buchholz has been on the disabled list since May 27 with a hyperextended left knee. He made his first rehab start on Saturday, going 4 2/3 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket, giving up three runs on four hits with no walks, five strikeouts, and two home runs. He threw 62 pitches, 42 for strikes, 68 percent.
In 10 outings with Boston, Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA. In 50 innings he has allowed 43 runs, 39 earned runs, on 75 hits, 14 walks (two intentional) with a hit batter and four wild pitches. Opponents are hitting .339 against him.
In his weekly appearance on WEEI, Farrell said Shane Victorino was held out of today's PawSox game with "stiffness." Victorino started in right field for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader in Rochester, going 0-for-2 with a run scored after reaching on an error. Farrell had hoped to see increased activity from Victorino in hopes he could rejoin the team on the road trip, but that is highly unlikely with the latest setback.
Farrell also announced that Felix Doubront will return to the rotation and get the Friday night start in Oakland while Brandon Workman serves his six game suspension for throwing at the Rays' Evan Longoria.
Doubront, on the disabled list since May 21 with a left shoulder strain, had three rehab outings with Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket. The lefthander went a combined 13 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits and five walks with 15 strikeouts, a 2.63 ERA and an opponents' average of .208.
Victorino has been on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain since May 21, missing 23 games. Along with 22-game DL stint to start the season, also a right hamstring strain, he has appeared in just 21 games this season, batting .242/.276/.352.
