Stephen Drew, Out of Thursday's Lineup, Will Undergo MRI on Friday

BOSTON – Shortstop Stephen Drew is out of the Red Sox starting lineup for the homestand opener against the Indians Thursday night at Fenway Park. For Drew, who has been hampered by a right oblique ailment, it will be the fourth straight game that he has missed.

Drew rejoined the Sox on May 21 and was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Since being called up on June 2 he has appeared in just four games, batting .071, going 1-for-14, with a .188 on-base percentage and .071 slugging percentage.

After feeling a “grab” during batting practice on Wednesday in Baltimore, Drew will be examined on Thursday and undergo an MRI on Friday, manager John Farrell said.

“Day to day,” Farrell said of Drew’s status. “He'll go through a full exam here this afternoon to determine if an MRI is needed. Yesterday in the second round of BP he felt the right oblique kind of grab him again. And he was going through some exercise and a full workout.

“So whether or not the MRI is needed tomorrow and even if there’s any question we’ll get it to get all the information possible. But he’s frustrated by it, and at the same time we can’t risk any longer term situation.”
