He can't seem to win here, so Jake Peavy may be better off joining a winning club.

Peavy's name usually comes to the top of the list when the discussion comes to a potential Red Sox fire sale. Now where there's smoke, there may be some fire.

ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes reported that the Cardinals were scouting Peavy at Fenway Park on Sunday. And Peter Gammons wrote that the Cards "want" the veteran Red Sox righty.

Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports also reported that the Cards were exploring the market for starting pitchers while colleague Ken Rosenthal suggests that the struggling Allen Craig could be a right-handed bat of interest to the Red Sox if they can strike a deal with St. Louis.

The 33-year-old Peavy has been better of late, but for the season he checks in with just one victory to go with seven losses and a 4.64 ERA. He is owed the prorated portion of $16 million for this season and the Sox would presumably have to eat a chunk of that money to move the Alabama native.

Peavy pitched well against the National League during his time with San Diego and it is expected that he would excel again if he doesn't have to deal with stronger AL lineups.

The Cardinals are 48-42, four games behind the division-leading Brewers in the NL Central division.

If Peavy gets moved, look for the improved Rubby De La Rosa to take his spot in the rotation.
