Could Jonny Gomes be going to Kansas City?
According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, the Royals have Red Sox outfielder and clubhouse inspiration Jonny Gomes on their radar of potential trade targets.
The Royals are looking to add another right-handed bat to their lineup and add production to the right field position.
Nori Aoki has struggled in the outfield for the Royals, batting .260 with no homers and just 14 RBIs in 71 games. Veteran Raul Ibanez has also been called upon to pick up slack in the lineup, but the 33-year-old Gomes would represent an upgrade.
The vociferous Red Sox outfielder is batting .234 with a .680 OPS including five homers and 30 RBIs in 67 games this year, contributing to the disappointing run production via the Red Sox outfield this season. Gomes has been effective vs. southpaws, batting .309 on the season compared to .156 against righthanders.
The Red Sox owe Gomes about $2 million for the remaining time on his two-year, $10 million deal that expires after this season.
It's would be hard to imagine the Red Sox getting an impact player back in any deal involving Gomes at this point.
