With five games remaining until the MLB All-Star break, the Red Sox would need to win every one of them just to repair the damage they’ve sustained in the five matchups they’ve played with Chicago teams over the past week that have all resulted in losses.

The big news of Wednesday was A.J. Pierzynski being designated for assignment and Christian Vazquez being called up to catch his first major league game.

Throwing to Vazquez will be another Pawtucket star, Rubby De La Rosa, who was called back up to Boston for this start. De La Rosa has started five games for the Red Sox this season, going 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA. He was very good in his last big league start, throwing seven innings and allowing one run on four hits with just one walk and seven strikeouts in Oakland on June 21 before he was sent back to the minors.

De La Rosa will be making his first career appearance against the White Sox; he’s 1-2 with a 2.91 ERA in five career games against the AL Central, three of them starts.
No current White Sox hitter has ever faced De La Rosa in the majors.

Starting for the White Sox will be southpaw Chris Sale, the Chicago ace who has made the AL All-Star team twice in the past three seasons. He’s 8-1 with a 2.16 ERA in 13 starts for the White Sox this season. Sale is coming off of his best start of the season, as he threw a complete game against the Seattle Mariners on July 4, allowing just one run on six hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts.

Sale has pitched in six games against the Red Sox in his career, starting one of them, holding a 1-0 record with a 0.71 ERA. No Red Sox batter has more than one career hit off Sale; Jonny Gomes and Xander Bogaerts’ hits were home runs, while David Ortiz and Mike Napoli collected the only other two Red Sox hits, with Napoli reaching base once more on a walk and Bogaerts being hit by a pitch.
