After the news came out on Friday that the Red Sox had agreed to a contract with Rusney Castillo, the Sox have announced that the deal with the Cuban outfielder is officially done.
Castillo signed a seven-year contract on Saturday that will keep him on the Red Sox through 2020. No financial information has been officially announced, but it has been reported that the deal is worth $72.5 million.
In 360 games over five seasons in Serie Nacional, Cuba’s major league, Castillo hit .319 with 75 doubles, 11 triples, 51 home runs, and 256 runs scored with an OBP of .383.
The 27-year-old is listed at 5-foot-9, 205 pounds. He last played in Cuba during the 2012-13 season, hitting .274 with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 68 games.
Castillo defected from Cuba this past December, establishing residency in Haiti before signing with the Red Sox. The team says he will report to Fort Myers in the coming days to resume baseball activities. No timetable has been established for when he might join the Red Sox.
