After the Red Sox scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, it was the defense that showed off some flair to keep their 8-4 lead intact.
Alex Wilson came on in relief of Allen Webster in the seventh, and it looked like the Sox were about give a few of those runs back, as Wilson allowed a single to Jake Marisnick and a double to Marwin Gonzalez to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Wilson struck out Robbie Grossman looking, but then AL batting leader Jose Altuve lifted a fly ball into right that looked to be deep enough to score Marisnick from third.
Daniel Nava made the catch, then fired to the plate as Marisnick took off for home. Nava’s throw arrived to catcher Christian Vazquez without a hop, and the Sox catcher then dove across the plate to nail Marisnick with a tag in the chest before the Houston outfielder scored, prompting a fist pump from Vazquez and high-fives for Nava once he reached the dugout.
Jackie Bradley, Jr. gets all of the accolades for his sensational catches and outfield plays, but Nava isn’t too shabby himself. The outfield assist he recorded after nabbing Marisnick at the plate was his sixth of the season, tying him for 13th among all American League outfielders.
