School: Graduated in 1977 from New Brighton (PA) High School, where he hit .769 in 1976. He played for three seasons at the University of Arizona in Tucson, winning the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur player in 1980.
Playing career: As a first baseman and outfield, his playing career spanned 11 seasons from 1980 to 1990, including 10 seasons in the majors with Expos (1981-85), Cubs (1986), Reds (1987), Indians (1988), and Brewers (1989-90). He finished his career with a .274 batting average with 16 homers, and 143 RBIs in 708 games.
Managing career: He joined the A's coaching staff in 2003 as bench coach after serving in the same position for the Rangers in 2002. In 2001, Francona joined the Indians as Special Assistant to Baseball Operations. From 1997-2000, he served as manager of the Phillies.
