5. Jake Stahl
1912-13
235 games
Finished 1st,*4th
Stahl didn't manage very long, but the 1912 Sox won a team-record 105 games, and the talented team was not to be denied thanks to the "$30,000 muff" by Giants outfielder Fred Snodgrass in the World Series.
Sortable Red Sox managerial statistics
Also serving at the helm: Chick Stahl (acting manager for 40 games during suspensions of Jimmy Collins in 1906; was slated to be manager in '07 but quit and subsequently committed suicide just before start of season); Cy Young (acting manager for six games at start of '07 season); George Huff (hired away from University of Illinois to succeed Young, but quit after just eight games); Bob Unglaub (first baseman and team captain took over for Huff but lasted just 29 games); Rudy York (interim manager for one game in 1959 between firing of Higgins and hiring of Jurges); Del Baker (interim manager for seven games in 1960 between firing of Jurges and return of Higgins); Pete Runnels (interim manager for final 16 games in 1966 after firing of Herman); Eddie Popowski (interim manager for final nine games in 1969 after firing of Dick Williams and final game of 1973 after firing of Kasko).
