Trot Nixon flipped his bat at Rays pitcher Ryan Rupe in the second inning after Rupe hit Nomar Garciaparra and Shea Hillenbrand with pitches. Nixon claimed it was an accident, but jawed with Rupe during the incident. Red Sox starter Frank Castillo retaliated as well, hitting Randy Winn, but was not ejected. Nixon and Castillo received four- and five-game suspensions, respectively. Castillo struck out six while allowing three hits in eight innings and was the winning pitcher in the emotional 2-0 victory.
