The Red Sox tried to have Josh Bard catch for knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, but ten passed balls in five games wasn't good enough. The Sox traded Bard and Cla Meredith to the San Diego Padres for Mark Loretta and Doug Mirabelli in April of 2006. Bard played until the end of the 2008 with San Diego before becoming a free agent. In January the catcher signed a one-year contract with the Red Sox, but didn't make it through Spring Training, as he was released in mid-March. Three days later he signed a minor league deal with the Nationals and has appeared in 62 games for the big league club this season.
