4. Questions for the captain

Jason Varitek may call a great game behind the plate, but he really struggled with the bat in the first half. In his last 39 games, Varitek has hit a paltry .141 with 41 strikeouts in 128 at bats. Adding another dimension to this storyline is the fact that he's a free agent at season's end. And at 36 years old, re-signing him to a long-term deal wouldn't seem to be the no-brainer it was a few years ago.
