In the top of the first, Oakland's Orlando Cabrera hits a comebacker to Josh Beckett, which the Boston starter couldn't field cleanly. As the ball rolled slowly towards the middle of the diamond, second baseman Dustin Pedroia ran in and barehanded it and threw off balance to first, which caused him to end up face first on the grass. The runner was safe and Beckett was charged with an error.
