Mike Aviles acquired
A day before the deadline in 2011, the Red Sox made a splash by acquiring infielder Mike Aviles for Yamaico Navarro and righthanded pitcher Kendal Volz. Aviles was a pleasant surprise for the Sox, batting .317 in 38 games in the second half while playing solid spot defense. In 2012, Aviles was named the starting shortstop for the Sox after Marco Scutaro was shipped out and Jose Iglesias was sent down to Pawtucket to start the season. Aviles is batting .260/.283/.409 this season and did a nice job filling in at the top of the order with Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford on the shelf for the first half of the season.
