Since Aug. 14, when his average bottomed out at .212, he has batted .245 with five home runs; if he can offer something similar in the playoffs, no one will be complaining. Beyond that, we all know the issues here. Varitek’s bat has slowed considerably, mostly from the left side. His contract is up. He either needs more help or the Sox have to get someone else.
