Gary Matthews Jr. has been playing with patellar tendinitis since June. His availability for the postseason is in doubt. The Angels received some encouragement yesterday when Kelvim Escobar, who projects to start Game 2 but hadn't started since Sept. 17 to give him a chance to rest his right shoulder, allowed just a run in six innings against the Athletics to improve his record to 18-7.
