In December of 2002, the Red Sox sent minor leaguers Josh Thigpen and Tony Blanco to the Cincinnati Reds to complete a trade for Walker. Walker batted .283 with 13 home runs in 2003, but lacked defensive range at second base and made a career-high 16 errors. Walker was not retained by Epstein and signed a $2.5 million deal with the Cubs for 2004.
