In December of 2002, Jose Contreras picked the New York Yankees and a four-year contract worth $32 million over the Red Sox when he defected from Cuba. Contreras was a 31-year-old Cuban star when he was the subject of an intense bidding war between the two AL East rivals. Theo Epstein went to Nicaragua, where Contreras had established residency, to try to sign him. Contreras is now pitching for the White Sox.
