Jim Rice, 1978
Ron Guidry and the Yankees beat the Red Sox in a one-game playoff to make the postseason, but the 25-year-old slugger edged the Yankees' 25-game-winner for the AL MVP honor, leading the league in home runs (46), RBIs (139), hits (213), triples (15), and slugging percentage (.600). Rice is the only player to lead the majors in homers, RBIs, and triples in the same season, and his 406 total bases were the most in the AL since the Yankees' Joe DiMaggio compiled 418 in 1937.
