Five worst developments
4. The contract status of Jason Bay
Not a thing has changed with regard to Bays contract status since the start of the season -- which is precisely the problem. Despite a recent dip, Bay remains the American League leader at the All-Star break and has knocked in more runs since joining the Sox last July 31 than any American Leaguer but Justin Morneau. All things considered, the Red Sox appear to have few options here. Because they have a shortage of young power hitters and because the free agent market looks thin, the Sox probably could replace Bay only through trade over the winter. If that happens, theyll have to pay some and give up prospects. Negotiations between the Sox and Bay are expected this week.
