4. Jason Varitek's resurgence
Over the winter, while offering his general philosophies on roster building, Theo Epstein said that the Red Sox sought to have, at worst, an average player at every position with elite players at select spots on the diamond. In 2008, the Sox indisputable weakness was at catcher, where they ranked 13th among the 14 AL clubs in OPS. So far this year, thanks to the suddenly ageless Jason Varitek, the Sox rank third in OPS behind Minnesota and Kansas City. (Varitek alone has an OPS of .826; with George Kottaras factored in, the number sits at .783.) Varitek historically has faded some in the second half -- this is especially common among catchers -- but so far this season, hes been one of the best in the game.
