All-Star highlight: While Beltre won't start the All-Star game, surveys and several experts support the notion that he should be the starter at third base over vote-winner Evan Longoria of the Rays.
"Beltre is simply the most deserving," wrote the Globe's Nick Cafardo in his baseball notes on Sunday.
This season: The numbers back Cafardo's point: Beltre is third in the majors in batting average (.341 through July 4), which is tops among third basemen who have more than 100 at-bats. He also has a .925 OPS. The knocks are that he's knocked two players out of games, and that he leads third basemen in errors, but his offense more than compensates and he's been mentioned in the early AL MVP chatter.
