Free agents the Red Sox might pursue
Scott Downs, reliever, Toronto Blue Jays
2010 stats: 5-5, 2.64 ERA, 61.1 IP, 1.00 WHIP, 48 SO, 14 walks
The lefthanded setup man was one of the most sought-after targets at the trade deadline. But the Jays, who will get two compensatory draft picks when he departs as a free agent, had an asking price higher than what teams, including the Red Sox and Yankees, were willing to give. This year he had an ERA of 2.64 and a WHIP of 1.00. His career ERA is 3.79 and WHIP is 1.36, showing Downs to be a bit of a late bloomer. The Red Sox certainly had their bullpen issues this season and Downs could help solidify the setup role, depending on his asking price.
