Baseball's biggest collapses
The Red Sox held a 14-game lead over the Yankees on July 19, but a weak-hitting Yankees shortstop named Bucky Dent is the only thing Boston fans remember from this season. The Yankees won 71 percent of their final 83 games and the Red Sox won just 52 percent of theirs, forcing a one-game playoff. Dents three-run homer in the seventh inning gave the Yankees a lead, and the Sox missed out on postseason play by one run. The Yankees beat the Dodgers in the World Series, and Dent was named MVP of the series.
