A closer look at baseball's details
Stan Grossfeld/Globe Staff
They say baseball is a game of inches, but it's really a game of little details. Sox captain Jason Varitek paints or tapes his nails so pitchers can see his signs easier (left). Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia do a little leap of faith as the pitcher releases the ball. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield never lets his fingertips touch the stitches when he throws a pitch, and Adrian Gonzalez hits with the name of his favorite psalm emblazoned on his bat. The Globe's Stan Grossfeld took a long lens around Fenway Park to capture the scene up close and personal.
