A closer look at baseball's details

The Red Sox have no idea how often they've repainted Pesky's Pole in right field but its always covered with graffiti. Said Red Sox historian Dick Bresciani: “There’s been a lot of discussion into how it has come into being, but it's mainly attributed to a remark Mel Parnell made in the early '50s when he was pitching and [Johnny] Pesky hit a home run. It wasn’t a game-winning home run but it was one of his infrequent home runs that curled around the pole. Mel said something about Pesky’s Pole and it stuck, just from that remark that Mel had made. I don’t know how many times its been repainted, but I know its a lot.'
