Fairly or unfairly, Lackey has been the scapegoat for the Sox' slide. Brought in to be a top-tier starter, Lackey's been unreliable even as the fourth or fifth-best hurler in the rotation. Lackey's 114 earned runs led the major leagues this season. If Lackey pitched like a reliable third starter with an ERA somewhere below 4.00, the Red Sox might not be in this mess. With an ERA of 6.41 and with difficulty handling a tough media environment, Lackey drew his fair share of criticism.
