You won't have Lackey to kick around
In his introductory press conference as general manager, Ben Cherington had news that surprised much of Red Sox Nation: pitcher John Lackey needed Tommy John surgery and would be out of commission for the 2012 season. Lackey faced the ire of fans for the unfulfilled expectations of a hefty contract and for his role in "Fried Chicken-gate." "He was dealing with some stuff both on the field and off the field that were really difficult," Cherrington said in October 2011. "I thought he showed tremendous toughness pitching through that."
