2004 In the summer before his senior year at the University of Cincinnati, Youkilis played for the Cape Cod Baseball League, finishing the summer sixth in batting average. The Red Sox drafted him 243d in 2001. He spent the next few seasons in the minor league system, and when Bill Mueller went down with an injury in May 2004, Youkilis got his shot in the majors. Even as a rookie, Youkilis wore his emotions on his sleeve - and more often his face - something that would make him a favorite target of opposing pitchers looking to send messages for years to come.
