What happens in a physical?
All joints are tested, including the shoulders, elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists.
Standard medical examination
Includes the heart, lungs, abdomen,and respiratory system. This would likely include a stress test.
A full set of standard tests to check for liver and kidney functions, cholesterol, glucose levels, and electrolytes.
A full set of standard urine tests are conducted, including tests for metabolic and kidney disorders.
Strength testing of the shoulders
In particular for pitchers, shoulders are measured for pushing and pulling power, and tested for strength and durability.
Range of motion
Movement of joints in flexion, extension, lateral bending, and rotation are measured and tested.
Pitchers go through an extra step and have magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder and elbow done.
For players who had suffered previous injuries, X-rays are taken to ensure player is fully healed.
