According to Shieber, the first "really big change" took place in this year. The Red Sox traded their predominantly blue uniforms for a red version. Shieber said it was paying "homage to the old Boston Red Stockings team from the 1870s. Baseball teams often go retro, but they think of it as a modern phenomenon ... they not only adapted red as a color, the uniform also featured a giant red sock. Not only did they embrace it, they kind of went overboard."
