Cincinnati to host 2015 All-Star Game
The Reds will host the 2015 All-Star Game, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. Commissioner Bud Selig is expected to make the announcement Wednesday during a visit to Cincinnati . . . Lefthander Pedro Feliciano, who spent two injury-plagued seasons with the Yankees, is returning to the Mets after agreeing to a minor league deal. The 36-year-old never pitched for the Yankees, spending two years on the disabled list because of a torn capsule in his left shoulder . . . Outfielder David Murphy and the Rangers agreed to a one-year deal worth $5,775,000 . . . The Astros signed lefthander Erik Bedard to a minor league deal and invited him to spring training . . . Players urged that Marvin Miller be put in the Hall of Fame as they spoke during a memorial for the union leader who helped players gain free agency in the 1970s. Miller died in November at 95. He has been denied five times by various Hall of Fame committees.
NCAA close to charging Miami hoops
Two former assistant basketball coaches at Miami were told they will be charged with ‘‘unethical conduct’’ when the NCAA presents the Hurricanes’ athletic department with its notice of allegations, which could come at any time, said two people familiar with the situation. The people said the coaches will be cited for violating a broad rule that covers conduct and cooperating with investigations. A CBSSports.com report Monday said that the NCAA could not prove former booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro’s claim that former coach Frank Haith or his staff paid $10,000 to the family of former player DeQuan Jones . . . Quinnipiac supplanted Boston College as the No. 2 men’s hockey team in the nation in the USCHO.com poll, the highest the Bobcats have ever been ranked. BC dropped to No. 3 after splitting two games last weekend . . . In the women’s poll, No. 2 Harvard and No. 3 BC swapped places, while No. 5 BU held pat . . . Assumption football coach Cory Bailey resigned to take a position at Coastal Carolina University.
Detroit’s Holmstrom to retire Tuesday
Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom will announce his retirement at a news conference on Tuesday, according to media reports. Holmstrom, who turns 40 on Wednesday, won four Stanley Cups in 15 years with the team . . . The Los Angeles Kings lost Matt Greene for the rest of the season because of a back injury suffered in the season-opener, TSN reported . . . The Chicago Blackhawks acquired goalie Henrik Karlsson from Calgary for a seventh-round pick in the 2013 draft . . . Landon Donovan will return to the Los Angeles Galaxy this MLS season, but exactly when he returns hasn’t been decided yet.
