In an atmosphere described as “dysfunctional, Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson has forced a reassignment of assistant coach Brian Scalabrine, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

More from the report by Adrian Wojnarowski:

Ownership and management have been strong advocates of Scalabrine and his performance on the job, sources told Yahoo Sports. Nevertheless, Warriors officials decided that as long as Jackson is the head coach, he'll have control of his coaching staff. It is immediately unclear what kind of a role to which the Warriors will transition Scalabrine, but management has no intention of letting him leave the organization, sources said.

Jackson hired Scalabrine in July after parting with former assistant coach Michael Malone, whom Jackson would go “weeks without speaking to”, according to the report. The 38-year-old Jackson is in his third year on the Warriors bench. He’s led the team to a 44-27 record this season, good for sixth in the Western Conference.

The 36-year-old Scalabrine played 11 seasons in the NBA, including five seasons in Boston, where he was a fan favorite. He was offered a position on Tom Thibodeau’s Chicago Bulls coaching staff after finishing his playing career in 2012 but turned it down to try his hand at broadcasting, working Celtics games for Comcast, among other gigs. Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has said he considered Scalabrine in his search for a head coach last season before hiring Brad Stevens.

The Yahoo! Sports report casts doubts on Jackson’s future with Golden State. Considering the team doesn’t want Scalabrine to leave, there could be bigger things in store for Scalabrine and the Warriors in the future.
