Mourning set for kidney transplant

Less than a month after retiring from the NBA, Alonzo Mourning is scheduled to undergo kidney transplant surgery tomorrow in New York, the Miami Herald reported yesterday. Mourning retired from the New Jersey Nets Nov. 24 because of complications from the kidney disease focal glomerulosclerosis. He has been searching for a matching kidney donor since, receiving offers from potential donors. The Herald, citing two unidentified sources, said it was believed Mourning is receiving a kidney from one of those donors . . . Lance Armstrong, a five-time winner of the Tour de France, said he plans to compete in cycling's biggest event two more times and said the 2005 race will probably be his last. "I don't know what I'm going to do in 2006," the 31-year-old Texas native said . . . Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone, 40, might have broken her sternum and some ribs in a spill last Friday at Hollywood Park, jeopardizing her status for the Dec. 26 opening day of Santa Anita's winter meeting. Earlier, doctors said they found no evidence of fractures. Krone, who won't ride again during the remainder of the Hollywood Park meeting, is the meet's leading rider with 23 wins entering yesterday's eight-card race . . . The WNBA will implement three rules changes. "The intent behind these changes is to increase our teams' offensive productivity," WNBA director of basketball operations Tracy Ellis-Ward said. The 3-point line will be moved to the international distance of 20 feet 6 1/4 inches from 19-9 and the lane will be widened to the NBA width of 16 feet from 12 feet. Also, the 30-second shot clock will be reset to 20 -- not 30 -- after a defensive foul or other defensive violation occurs with less than 20 seconds left. It'll be unchanged if the foul or violation occurs with 20 seconds or more left.
