Chronology of Donaghy case

At his news conference yesterday, NBA commissioner David Stern provided a timeline for league and FBI investigations into referee Tim Donaghy and alleged connections to gambling activity dating to January 2005.

January 2005
NBA security looks into a dispute between Donaghy and his neighbors in West Chester, Pa. The NBA calls Donaghy to discuss the harassment allegations leveled by the neighbors, but Donaghy claims he was being harassed by the neighbors. As part of the investigation, it comes to light that Donaghy may have gambled at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City, which he denies. A further NBA check with every casino in Atlantic City and Las Vegas does not turn up evidence that he did. As a result of its displeasure over the allegations, the NBA informs Donaghy he will not work the second round of the playoffs in 2005 after he had worked second-round games the previous year. The NBA believes it makes clear the conduct he exhibited in his dispute with neighbors was unacceptable and, if it continued, would be a reason to terminate him. Donaghy subsequently moves to Florida, and the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons produce no further reports of unprofessional conduct.

November 2005
The FBI begins an investigation into Donaghy for criminal activity that continues until May of this year. During that time frame, Donaghy referees 139 regular-season games, eight playoff games, and four preseason games.

June 20, 2007
The FBI calls the NBA and asks to talk with league officials about a referee alleged to be gambling on games. They meet the next day, and top NBA officials agree to cooperate fully with investigators and provide information without subpoena. The NBA learns Donaghy stands accused of betting on NBA games and providing information for the purpose of betting on NBA games, possibly including some he officiated.

July 9, 2007
Donaghy submits a letter of resignation. Stern acknowledges the NBA would have preferred to terminate Donaghy upon learning of certain allegations, but it was determined the investigation would best be aided if the league did not take action right away.

July 20, 2007
News of the investigation breaks.
