Harris takes command as Nets roll past Suns
- |
Devin Harris scored a career-high 47 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter, and the New Jersey Nets ended their 14-game losing streak at Phoenix by rallying to beat the Suns, 117-109, last night.
The Nets had not won at US Airways Center since their first visit in 1993, but they used a late run to overcome the Suns.
With Harris becoming the second player in two games to score more than 40 against the Suns - Miami's Dwyane Wade had 43 Friday night - the Nets scored their second road victory in two nights, after beating Utah on Saturday.
Harris, whose previous high was 38, hit 14 of 25 field goals and 17 of 17 free throws in a dazzling performance.
For the second straight game, the Suns were turnover prone. They committed 22 turnovers, leading to 33 New Jersey points.
Vince Carter added 28 points for New Jersey, Yi Jianlian had 14 and Brook Lopez 12.
Steve Nash, who missed Friday's game because of a thigh contusion, led the Suns with 26 points and nine assists. Amare Stoudemire had 25 points and 12 rebounds before being ejected with his second technical foul with 3:24 remaining and Phoenix leading, 100-98. Matt Barnes had 18 points.
Harris put the Nets ahead for good, 102-100, with a basket with 2:11 remaining. New Jersey finished the fourth quarter with 43 points, overcoming an 11-point deficit starting the period.
Lakers 112, Raptors 99 - Pau Gasol had 24 points and nine rebounds, Kobe Bryant had 23 points and seven assists and host Los Angeles improved their league-best record to 14-1.
Bryant came 15 points shy of reaching the 22,000-point mark faster than any other player. Had he done it, he would have beaten Wilt Chamberlain to that total by one day, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Anthony Parker led Toronto with 19 points and five teammates also scored in double figures. Jermaine O'Neal missed his third straight because of a sprained left ankle.
Bryant sat out the fourth quarter while Andrew Bynum and the Lakers' reserves blew the game open with a 17-4 run that increased a 6-point lead to 107-88 with 5:50 to play.
Nuggets 104, Rockets 94 - Chauncey Billups scored 28 points, including 11 in a 19-7 third-quarter run that visiting Denver used to break away from Houston, which played its third straight game without injured star Tracy McGrady (sore left foot).
The Nuggets lost their leader when Carmelo Anthony took a seat in the second quarter after aggravating a sore right elbow that's been bothering him for two weeks. Anthony insisted it wasn't a serious injury and that he'll play tomorrow night against Toronto after receiving treatment today.
Anthony, who played 14 minutes and was 1 of 4 from the floor, hadn't been held below 10 points since Nov. 28, 2005, when he played just 1 1/2 minutes against New Jersey before leaving with a sprained ankle after scoring 2 points.
Houston was down, 99-92, when Kenyon Martin, who had just sunk a hook shot over Yao, rejected the big man with a thunderous block that ended the Rockets' hopes for a comeback.
Trail Blazers 96, Pistons 85 - LaMarcus Aldridge scored 27 points and Greg Oden had a career-high 13 rebounds to help visiting Portland beat Detroit.
Brandon Roy scored 19 points and Oden finished with 11 for Portland, which has won four straight. The Pistons fell to just 6-6 since Allen Iverson joined the team. Richard Hamilton had 18 for Detroit, which is 0-4 on Sundays and 10-2 during the rest of the week.
Bulls 103, 76ers 92 - Ben Gordon scored 21 points, Drew Gooden had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and visiting Chicago rallied from an early deficit to beat Philadelphia. Derrick Rose, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, contributed 18 points and 10 assists for the Bulls.![]()
