Derrick Rose scored 13 points and had seven assists to lead the balanced Chicago Bulls to an impressive 92-85 season-opening victory over visiting San Antonio last night.

Rose missed most of the preseason with an ankle injury, but he showed some of the explosiveness that carried him to the Rookie of the Year award last season.

Chicago pulled away in the second half despite Tim Duncan’s 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Spurs.

Chicago’s Luol Deng had 17 points and nine rebounds, Kirk Hinrich added 14 points, and Tyrus Thomas scored all of his 13 in the second half. Joakim Noah chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds and the Bulls held advantages on the glass (52-44) and in second-chance points (22-13).

Nuggets 97, Trail Blazers 94 - Carmelo Anthony scored 19 of his 41 points in the fourth quarter and visiting Denver was helped by Portland’s troubles at the free throw line.

Greg Oden missed a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds left, squandering a chance for Portland to go ahead. After Oden’s misses, Anthony made a pair and Brandon Roy missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Roy finished with 33 points.
