Isiah Thomas insisted yesterday he is “completely focused’’ on his current job at Florida International and would not reveal whether he had any talks about becoming coach and president of the Los Angeles Clippers. Foxsports.com reported that Thomas is under consideration for those jobs, a story that the team denied to ESPNLosAngeles.com. The Hall of Famer is in his first season coaching FIU, which lost to North Texas, 68-66, yesterday to fall to 7-19 overall and 4-9 in the Sun Belt Conference . . . Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy will miss the next three games and the All-Star Game with a right hamstring injury. Roy, who already has missed 11 of the last 12 games, was hurt in a Jan. 13 game against Milwaukee, then aggravated the injury Jan. 20 at Philadelphia. Dumont wins superpipe final in Vt.
Simon Dumont won a freeski superpipe final for the first time this season, while Jossi Wells locked up the overall Dew Cup title. The 23-year-old Dumont’s winning score of 94.75 in West Dover, Vt., surpassed 19-year-old Tucker Perkins, whose best score was 92.00. Wells finished fifth in the final, but his total of 260 points was 5 better than Dumont. Kaitlyn Farrington claimed her first victory at the women’s snowboard superpipe final with JJ Thomas pulling down the top score in the men’s competition for his first win on the three-stop circuit as well . . . Boston College’s Kelli Stack had two goals and fellow Eagle Molly Schaus had 30 saves to lift the US women’s team to an 8-2 victory over Finland in its final pre-Olympic hockey tuneup in Colorado Springs.Tennis
US has 2-0 lead in Fed Cup quarterfinal
Melanie Oudin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands won the opening singles to give the United States a 2-0 lead over France in the quarterfinals of the Fed Cup in Lievin, France. Oudin defeated Pauline Parmentier, 6-4, 6-4, after Mattek-Sands outlasted Alize Cornet, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, in the first match. In other quarterfinal matches, defending champion Italy and Ukraine were tied at 1-1, as were Russia and Serbia, and Germany and Czech Republic . . . Defending champion Marin Cilic beat third-seeded Juergen Melzer, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, to reach the Zagreb Indoors final. He will play Michael Berrer, who beat Philipp Petzschner, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, to reach his first ATP Tour final . . . Feliciano Lopez upset top-seeded Gael Monfils, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), and Stephane Robert ousted second-seeded David Ferrer, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the final of the SA Open in Johannesburg.Baseball
Bedard gets 1-year deal with Seattle
Free agent lefthander Erik Bedard is coming back to the Seattle Mariners. General manager Jack Zduriencik announced the team and the oft-injured 30-year-old agreed to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2011. Bedard is rehabilitating in his native Canada following surgery in August to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder . . . Oakland traded lefthander Dana Eveland to Toronto for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Eveland, 26, had been designated for assignment by the club Monday.Miscellany
Blazers drop Knighthawks in lacrosse
Dan Dawson scored four times and the Boston Blazers (3-3) went 4 for 5 on the power play to defeat the Rochester Knighthawks, 14-8, in National Lacrosse League action at TD Garden. Anthony Cosmo made 34 saves as the Blazers earned their third straight victory . . . Quality Road broke his own track mark at Gulfstream Park while winning the $500,000 Donn Handicap by a record 12 3/4 lengths. The Todd Pletcher-trained colt covered 1 1/8 miles in 1 minute 47.49 seconds with John Velazquez aboard, breaking the mark of 1:47.72 he set last year when winning the Florida Derby . . . The Detroit Red Wings traded forward Ville Leino to Philadelphia for defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and the Flyers’ fifth-round draft pick in 2011 . . .
