Celtics take a shot at Pittsnogle with two-year contract

In what amounted to a very big deal in West Virginia, the Celtics signed 6-foot-11-inch free agent Kevin Pittsnogle yesterday to a two-year, partially guaranteed deal, ensuring the elaborately tattooed center with considerable range will attend training camp.

Before signing Pittsnogle, the Celtics already had 16 players under contract with only 15 allowed on the final roster. In other words, Pittsnogle has a tough road ahead, though he brings unique skills to Boston.

``We lost a big man with outside shooting in Raef LaFrentz and we felt like Kevin was one of the best big men shooters in college," said executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge.

``If he proves he can defend and rebound and learn the system, he'll have a chance to get in great shape and make the team. He's a 6-11 shooter and those guys are not easy to find."

Then again, every team had a chance to draft Pittsnogle in June and passed. After an impressive career at West Virginia University, where he shot 41 percent from 3-point range (253 for 615 ) and had memorable NCAA Tournament performances as a junior (six 3-pointers against Louisville) and senior (averaging 17 points in three games), Pittsnogle went undrafted after gaining weight and appearing out of shape.

``I wasn't too worried about it because I could pick and choose what teams to work out for and go after," said Pittsnogle about being overlooked in the draft last month.

``[The Celtics] give me a great opportunity to make the team and to be with a great bunch of players. I knew they could use a big guy who could shoot the ball. It's a great chance to show what I can do."

Pittsnogle, who turns 22 Sunday, plans to visit the Celtics' training facility today and meet with the coaching staff.
