ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Magic needed one defensive stop to secure the biggest win of the Dwight Howard era last night. Glen Davis's buzzer-beating 21-foot jumper stopped that from happening.
"I didn't think he was going to make it," Orlando's Rashard Lewis said. "But he stepped up and made a big shot."
With 49.6 seconds remaining, Howard stepped to the free throw line and hit the biggest shots of his young career. Davis would steal his big moment 48 seconds later with the second of two big fourth-quarter shots.
"It's something that I have been dreaming about," said Howard, who had 23 points and 17 rebounds. "Everybody is always talking about fourth-quarter free throws and me. I just wanted to get up there and knock them down and Big Baby spoiled it."
Davis's heroics were impressive, but the Celtics' celebration that followed wasn't appreciated by some of the Magic players.
"It most definitely adds fuel to the fire," Lewis said. "We don't like that type of stuff. You have to be professional about the game of basketball. We're a professional team and we expect them to be the same way."
"Those guys were jumping up and down, waving their hands at us, saying bye, but it's not over yet; it's just 2-2," Lewis said. "We could have done the same thing when we won on their court, but we're more professional than that. They still have to win ballgames. The series ain't over yet."
The series isn't over, but it's certainly become more difficult for the Magic.
Although they have one of the league's best road records, winning another game is Boston is going to be a tough task for this young Magic team. Still the Magic are confident that they can go into the hostile environment and win another game.
One thing that must change if the Magic are going to win again is the volume of 3-pointers they're taking. The Magic are 31 for 91 from behind the arc in the series. The 60 missed shots haven't stopped them from pulling up from 3-point land, even when attacking the basket looks to be the better thing to do.
The Magic have won many games with their 3-point shooting. But Game 4 was lost because of their refusal to throw a pump fake and go to the basket.
"As a shooter you don't want to think twice about taking a shot," Lewis said. "If anything, I think we need to go to Dwight more and let him be dominant down low."![]()
