NEW YORK - It has not taken long for Marquis Daniels and Eddie House to develop an understanding during the Celtics’ exhibition season. House converted his first 3-pointer after a Daniels penetration and assist in the team’s opener against Houston on the Mexican border. And they hooked up again north of the border Sunday afternoon, Daniels assisting on all three of House’s 3-pointers in a 101-82 win over the Raptors.

“He’s just a great passer, a great cutter, he has a high basketball IQ, and that fits our team,’’ coach Doc Rivers said of Daniels. “Eddie’s going to have a big year this year because he’s playing with Marquis. He’s able to play the point from the ‘3’ spot, which takes Eddie off the ball and allows Eddie to be what he is, and that’s a shooter.’’

House has played 132 minutes in six exhibitions, second behind Rajon Rondo, with games remaining against the Knicks tonight and Cleveland in Columbus, Ohio, tomorrow. House has connected on 13 of 30 3-pointers.

The Daniels-House backcourt combination has caused matchup problems for opposing second units, testing their perimeter defense.

Daniels is able to advance the ball against defenders similar in height, or against smaller, quicker guards. House finds open spots to line up shots near the 3-point line.

“Very smart player, a veteran,’’ House said of Daniels. “He knows how to play the game, gets fouls, he’s a good slasher, good with the ball on the pick and roll, makes the right decisions. He has a good combination of skills that fits what we’re trying to do here.

“We’re just playing basketball, making moves, finding the open guys, passing to the open man. That’s what we try to do, any way we can, make it an easy shot. We’re not trying to force anything. The first unit passed up a lot of shots trying to get another man a shot [against Toronto], but that’s just what we do on this team. We all want to see each other succeed, so guys are just trying to make plays.

“If guys are trying to over-pressure me, let [Daniels] bring it up, no big deal. At the end of the day, we’re going to get into the same stuff if I brought it up. I’m definitely going to get shots with him in there. I run to open spots, that’s one thing. I’m never just standing still unless I’m supposed to be. I’m constantly moving and stuff. And he’s got the great skill set that complements the team.’’

Daniels’s ability to see the court and deliver passes from the point adds other dimensions to the offense.

“I try to understand where everyone should be on the floor, to see things before they happen,’’ he said, “and use my size. I’m very comfortable in that [point guard] role.’’

Said Ray Allen, “We can put him in the post, he can get to the hole, he can do a lot. He’s not a one-dimensional player. He’s going to thrive in the system, in having so many players around that can make him better, and he can make them better.’’

Rivers and president of basketball operations Danny Ainge have been tracking Daniels since narrowly missing out on signing him as a free agent in 2004.

“He’s so much smarter than I ever knew, on the floor,’’ Rivers said.

“We always knew he had a high basketball IQ, and it’s much higher than we thought.’’

Starters Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, Paul Pierce, Allen, and Rondo could be performing for the final time in the exhibition season tonight. Rivers plans to go with reserves against the Cavaliers, since the teams will be rematched in the regular-season opener in Cleveland next Tuesday . . . The Celtics have won five straight games since a 96-90 exhibition season-opening loss to Houston in Hidalgo, Texas . . . Ainge said no decisions have been finalized on the status of J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker. Also, Rondo has one year remaining on his contract, and will become a restricted free agent after this season if the Celtics fail to extend his deal by Oct. 31.
