League looking at Rondo-Paul tiff
PHILADELPHIA - The NBA office has not made a determination regarding an inquiry into a conflict between New Orleans guard Chris Paul and the Celtics’ Rajon Rondo Sunday night.
A double technical foul was assessed to Paul and Rondo after they tangled in the second quarter of the Celtics’ 97-87 win over the Hornets. After the game, Paul and Rondo argued near the Celtics bench and were separated by team security.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers and Rondo said the league has not contacted them.
“I have no comment on it, really,’’ Rondo said after last night’s 105-74 win over Philadelphia. “They’ve got to do what they’ve got to do.’’
Said Rivers, “I don’t expect anything to come of it.’’
Rondo had 11 points and 5 assists in 27:52 of playing time in last night’s victory.
“So far, so good,’’ Rondo said. “We’re doing it on both ends of the floor, with both groups. It’s definitely helping, the second unit coming in and doing their job, and we’re going off that.
“The way the second unit is playing, we’ll get a lot of rest and that’s what we need going into the postseason, having guys healthy.’’
Rondo said the Celtics improved after struggling at times against New Orleans.
“We did a better job,’’ he said. “We were better defensively, offensive execution was better, as well.’’
Rondo started the week $55 million richer, following the signing of a five-year contract, after negotiations continued until just before the Monday deadline.
Any changes in Rondo?
“Just his bank account, that’s it,’’ Rivers said. “Besides your clothes, your house, your car, I don’t think you change much as a person. I don’t think money does that to you.
“Honestly, that whole thing about when you give a guy money they change, I’ve never bought into that. I think guys that love the game love the game and guys that don’t they don’t. Pay them 10 bucks or a million bucks they’re going to be the same.’’
“I didn’t get in the ring with him,’’ Wallace said. “I just watched.’’
Wallace, a Philadelphia native, scored 20 points in 23:56 of playing time.
“A lot of friends and family don’t have the opportunity to see me play,’’ Wallace said. “It’s always fun to come back here and play.’’
Wallace on the Celtics’ second unit: “Just defense. That’s what we hang our hat on. [The Sixers] are a young and dangerous ball club; to keep them lingering around towards the end of the game, it could have definitely swung the other way.’’
Philadelphia entered with a league-leading 52.6 shooting percentage but shot 36.3.
“The first three games, it was spectacular,’’ Rivers said of the defense. “The last game [against the Hornets], we actually didn’t play good defense but, in our opinion, we got away with it.’’
Rivers has set a goal of establishing the Celtics as a record-setting defensive team.
“We’re together longer, same starting five,’’ Rivers said. “That allows us to be better [than the 2007-08 Celtics]. We have more length with Marquis [Daniels] and Rasheed, so I think that makes us a little bit better.’’
As for making a name defensively, Rivers said the standard was set by the Chicago Bears team that defeated the Patriots, 46-10, in the 1986 Super Bowl.
“We’re not stating that or going around talking about it, really,’’ Rivers said. “In our minds, ’85 Bears - at least in my mind, since I’m from Chicago - and when you hear that name, what do you think of? Say ‘the ’85 Bears,’ most people say, ‘greatest defense ever,’ ‘one of best defensive teams ever.’
“It’s a good goal for us, because if you can achieve that, all the other stuff usually happens for you.’’![]()
