Oden shut down

Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff July 10, 2007 04:25 PM

The Portland Trail Blazers will shut down No. 1 pick Greg Oden for the rest of summer league so Oden can have his tonsils removed, the Blazers are reporting on their website.

The swollen tonsils are obstructing Oden’s breathing and limiting his stamina, but Oden is not making excuses, according to the Oregonian.

“There's no excuses, because I was out there playing,” Oden said, according to The Oregonian. “And if I'm playing, I'm playing, so if I have a bad game, it's not on my tonsils, it's on me.”

Oden was limited to six points and two rebounds before fouling out (with 10 fouls) against the Celtics in his summer league debut.

A surgery date has not been set, but Oden will need about 2-3 weeks to recover, according to the Oregonian.
