Stoudamire to be freed

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff January 26, 2008 03:00 PM

The agent for Memphis Grizzlies point guard Damon Stoudamire, Aaron Goodwin, said his client has agreed in principle on a buyout from the team. The deal is expected to be finalized on Monday. He is expected to clear waivers on Wednesday.

Stoudamire is expected to be courted by the Celtics, Suns, and Raptors, the team that drafted him in 1995 out of Arizona. Stoudamire would consider donning the green and white, and the Celtics are quietly on the market for a backup point guard.

Stoudamire is owed $4.6 million for next season -- a figure that would be cut in half if he plays in fewer than 55 games or averages less than 20 minutes a game this season. In the 29 games he's played this season, the 13-year veteran is averaging 7.3 points per game -- about half his career average -- and 3.9 assists. This season, he's making $4.3 million.

  1. Are we expecting a Sam Cassell buyout? I've always wanted to see him in Celtic green.

  1. gary payton is a better option. Does stoudamire even know what defense is. Thats the reason weve been losing these games. No defense and the other teams point gaurds our killing us

  1. At least based on the bit I know - I agree that Sam Cassell is a better fit overall, but if not available soon enough or if money or deal is not right than DS is second choice - either way Celts need to fill this hole - it really showed up in MINN game last night with Rondo out and House a bit out of his element.

  1. Rondo needs some help and House isn't a true point guard.

  1. we have him...his name is Eddie House...we need a defender at the point to handle Billups

  1. David is right. Cassell is the one we need and he'd increase our chances of raising banner # 17.

  1. Sign him A.S.A.P.!!!!

  1. Bring back Tiny Archibald

  1. Sign him, Danny. He can penetrate, dribble, pass, and shoot threes like a crazyman. I've seen that guy heat up and can threes from all over the building. Seriously, with Rajon out of the lineup ball penetration stops, the offense suffers, and everone is heisting up jumpers.

  1. And the rich keep getting richer... Go get em' Danny boy!

  1. Do It Danny!

  1. Either one is a good fit... Just depends if we are looking for a clutch guard who can score down the stretch, like Sam, or someone who can run the offense for the second unit.. I vote for Damon, he can run a team and hit the open three, which would stretch the defense and allow Paul and KG to be more effective down low...

  1. Guys...not just anyone, please. Don't you wonder why he was replaced by a ROOKIE??? What he has been in the past and what he is now seems like quite a contrast. I don't think he's the right fit in the role as an aging vet backup PG on the C's. I think he might have some ego, attitude or work ethic issues....

  1. I'd rather have the Glove back. He knows the players and atmosphere already.

  1. Who is going to go if they sign him?

Posted by Todd January 26, 08 07:44 PM
  1. I'd much rather sign Randy Livingstone from the D league

  1. He is not good enough to be second string for Memphis -- why would we want him?

Posted by Stan January 26, 08 07:58 PM
  1. Sam Cassell will not be bought out. We do need a veteran pg. I'm not sure Stoudamire is the answer, but he's probably the best we can get. I say sign him.

  1. The Celtics could use some veteran leadership at the point. The last 10 games or so have been disturbing at best. Having said that Damon Stoudamire helped which playoff team to which championship run??? Oh, that's right.

My money is with Cassell. Hold out Danny!! Isn't that what you did for 4 years when all the Celtics fans were begging you to put a real NBA team on the court?

    Posted by Rick W January 26, 08 08:19 PM
  1. Let's go get him he'sa playmaker first, scorer second

Posted by Craig in brockton January 26, 08 08:49 PM
  1. Cassell isn't a better fit. Stoudamire is a pass first point guard which the Celtics would prefer to the shoot first Cassell. With already 3 big time scores on the team, we don't need someone looking for their shot.

  1. he is a curse - not a good fit - just because he smokes marijuana doesn't mean he should wear the green.

Posted by Kendal January 26, 08 09:34 PM
  1. he's not all that he used to be and he can't play D. He's not the answer!!

Posted by Tom January 26, 08 09:43 PM
  1. How Yankee-esque.

Posted by none January 26, 08 10:02 PM
  1. Agree with David...If healthy and rested enough for the stretch, Cassell's a proven winner . Stoudamire is not in my opinion

Posted by Dennis January 26, 08 10:26 PM
  1. Sign Ramon Rivas. He's reinvented himself as a point guard and has been tearing up the Italian league. With his chronic back spasms under control, he is an assist king. Don't be a fool, Danny. Ramon bleeds Celtic green and will push this team to Championship status.

Posted by Rodreg January 26, 08 10:46 PM
  1. Yeah, we need him, but the Cassell rumors are intriguing. As for Cassell are the Clips really going to buy him out? I had heard trade? If so, what do they have to offer? A draft pick? Not worth it. I like Cassell better than Stoudamire (he's bigger and can post up) but I don't want to trade for him unless it's Gabe Pruitt or a second rounder.

Posted by Akira January 26, 08 10:56 PM
  1. Is he REALLY the best option? Let's be patient...

Posted by Shady Lane January 26, 08 11:05 PM
  1. a sam cassell buyout will never happen and a trade with the celtics... the celts have no one to trade for sam cassel ... SIGN Damon Stoudamire, he is the #one option.
    #2=GABE PRUITT

Posted by LP January 26, 08 11:16 PM
  1. Sam Cassell for sure. He offers much more of a threat at the point guard position. Bigger, scores more...... just an all out better fit for the Celtics. Get it done Danny!

Posted by Shawn Griffin January 26, 08 11:30 PM
  1. I still like Gary Payton

Posted by Andrew Friedman January 26, 08 11:33 PM
  1. Cassell isnt getting bought out, so Damon it is.....I hope he's off the bud.

Posted by Lee in Oregon January 26, 08 11:53 PM
  1. Sign Mighty Mouse I think he has something to prove at 34. Cassell had his chances he is to old.

Posted by Ryan Conway January 27, 08 01:25 AM
  1. its hard because if you wait for Sam I AM you might not get him lets just go with the safe bet on Stoudamire at least he can shoot better than Sam and is a little bigger of a guard maybe he can play D against Billups

Posted by Steve January 27, 08 02:22 AM
  1. Remember, he is a scoring point guard; his forte has not been distrubuting the ball to teammates due to the fact that he's always had to carry the load for teams in the scoring dept. The only question here with this man is whether he is willing to tone down his game, adjust his talents to the players around him and score only when needed. The Celtics put the template in place this season to center the scoring around three players; when one or two of them are not on, another player(s) needs to step up. If he cannot do it , then poster #2 is in the right; just wait for the Sam 'The Alien" to be bought out in LA.

  1. you are dumb if you think we don't need him
