Cassell update

Posted by Marc J. Spears, Globe Staff February 28, 2008 04:23 PM

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Sam Cassell is expected to sign buyout papers with the franchise soon and will sign with the Boston Celtics once he clears waivers, according to an NBA source.

Cassell and the Clippers have agreed to buyout terms. He is expected to receive some of the money remaining on his $6.1 million salary this season.

Once the 38-year-old's buyout is official, he has to clear waivers (which takes 48 hours) before he can become eligible to sign with another team. The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder is expected to clear waivers by Saturday and would be eligible to play the rest of the season and postseason for the Celtics.

Cassell is averaging 12.8 points and 4.7 assists this season. He has said he would have no problem backing up starting point guard Rajon Rondo if he came to Boston. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge has said he is interested in finding the "right veteran point guard."

Cassell will not travel with the Clippers to Denver, where they face the Nuggets on Friday night.

The Clippers are expected to sign guard Flip Murray, who was let go by the Detroit Pistons, to replace Cassell.

  1. The only question remains whether or not Sam Cassell will pass to Pierce for the open shot with :02 on the clock in game seven vs. the Lakers.

  1. i dont like the move to get him, your messing with some good team chemistry. he brings a bad attitude to the game dirty player, selfish, and your reverting back to older players once again.we have been down this path before. very long time celtic fan

  1. I've always like Cassell, but I was not fond of the hard foul he committed against Rondo a few weeks ago. It was a cheap shot.

Any word re: Brent Barry? Is San Antonio a lock?

  1. Cassell is a dirty player and a thug. If he tries that hard dirty foul tactic against Rondo in practice, I will personally rip his Martian head off.

  1. Now we'll see what kind of coach Doc Rivers really is. They have less than
30 games remaining and he eventually is going to have an 8 man rotation
for the playoffs. No more mixing and matching. Some players will have to
    suffer the consequences!

  1. Sam Cassell is CLUTCH, GREAT TEAMMATE, BIG TIME GAMER & WINNER. Check every team he's been with. He always makes them better and if not for a bad coaching move not to foul Raja Bell, he gets the LA Clippers past Pheonix and into Western Conf Finals.. This is a Big Time aquisition that could really put the C's over the top. Dirty Player? I think you are referring to Jon Stockton... Selfish player? Maybe you meant STEPHON"MY STAR IS FADING FAST" MARBURY. Bad Attitude? Hmmmmm, maybe that's Shawn "I'd rather play for the worst team & get mine" Marion??..... ROCK THE BELLS WITH SAM CASSELL!!! 2 S'S 2 L'S BABY!!!

  1. As long as the Big Three think this is good, I'm good. You can be sure Ainge passed this move by them. KG knows Cassell. I think it will work. Good move, Danny

  1. Bob, Cassell's a stand up guy who's had a great career and still puts up good numbers with limited minutes. He did something stupid out of frustration about a month ago, he's still a great addition to any team. He'll do nothing but add to chemistry, he's already played with KG in Minnesota and Ray-Ray in Milwaukee. And enjoyed much success while playing with the two of them, add him to mentor Rondo (who no doubt will be able to get over one hard foul) and to distribute the ball to not only KG, Allen, but Pierce too (obviously) and with his smarts and ability on defense, it was a great pick up with absolutely no downside

  1. Long time fan of the celtics but not Cassell. He does not seem to see an open man and has taken too many low percentage shot during crunch time, like trying to be the hero of the game. I hope he changes if he wants to win a championship with the celtics or he could be the goat.
